Honestly Confused.

This is a thought from the debate, and I'm hoping someone can explain it to me, because I'm honestly really confused.

What are we trying to achieve in Iraq? What does "victory" mean? What does America gain from being in Iraq?

I really don't understand at all. McCain keeps talking about how we're winning, but I can't figure out what the hell we're supposedly winning at.
